Wild America is an American television nature program that was produced by cinematographer Bob Landis and hosted by Marty Stouffer. It was broadcast on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) Public television stations during the 1987-92 seasons, and reruns currently air on the digital subchannel “Create TV” (formerly part of the U.S. government’s “America One” sat broadcasting service) and on the digital subchannel “Wild TV” (formerly part of the World Harvest Television network, now America One). The series was also rerun as part of the new U.S. “Earth Day” digital subchannel network that is available to public television stations across the United States.
The program had some natural history segments, but was largely a documentary about the experiences of Marty Stouffer and his brother Mark, who would travel throughout North America in an Airstream trailer microsoft windows ntfsformattedwarren, camping in remote areas. The show’s theme song was “American Heartbeat” by Michael Bradley. Many of the film sequences included in Wild America were deemed too graphic, intense, or unflattering to be shown on commercial television. While the program was slightly more restrained than its contemporaries (it replaced some shots of animal predation with still images), PBS stations frequently carried disclaimers before and after commercial breaks that cautioned viewers about the content.
